Snoody Pleasures Logo Redesign

I get a lot of requests to redesign logos. This is usually due to clients’ initial attempting to save money, which ironically always results in them spending more money in the future. This particular client reached out to me for a complex logo design. Once I gave her the price, she decided to go with another designer.

Fast forward a few months later and she had returned with a logo design that she just wasn’t happy with and was now ready to hire me deliver the logo that she envisioned.

Research and Planning Phase

Client Requirements

Often thinking that more is better, most non-designers don’t understand what goes into a good logo. They have a hard time understanding the concept that less is better. The client wanted a very busy logo design for her adult toys business venture. She had come across an image of a vagina-shaped flower and wanted a detailed illustration of it as the graphic element of the logo. For the typeface she wanted a script font that had two sexy women’s eyes in place of the O’s. She wanted to use multiple colors such as pink, black, white, green, red, purple, blue, and gradients.

I explained to the client that she wants an extremely complex logo design and that the effectiveness in a logo is its ability to serve it’s purpose in a simple manner. I also explained that the versatility of the logo would be drastically reduced due to its complexity, which would mean that it would be difficult to reproduce in certain mediums and it would be costly to do so. The client’s previous designer did not attempt to explain how this complex logo may not work, and instead simply gave the client what she asked for. As the design professional, I always attempt to educate my clients on how their ideas could be improved. I do this everyday and they don’t. They don’t know any better, I do.

I recommended she pick no more than 3 colors and that two colors would be even better. The client was adamant about using the colors pink and black more than any other colors. I asked the client if she was open to changing the style of the vagina shaped flower and she was. I advised the client that having a graphic that accompanies the logo as well as an additional graphic inside of the typeface would lead to the multiple graphic elements competing for attention and that using one strong graphic element would work better. However, the client insisted on having multiple graphic elements in this logo. I made the suggestion that the client could have the name of the business with one graphic as her logo, and use the flower graphic as part of her brand identity.

I told the client that I would figure out a way to make this work for her. After all, as a designer my purpose is to problem solve. I explained that using the two sexy women’s eyes were causing the name of the business to be hard to read. I asked the client if she would be open to using an object that represents sexuality which also has more of an “O” shape in order to increase readability and she agreed. I looked through her list of adult toys searching for “O” shaped items and suggested handcuffs instead of sexy eyes. This would help the logo not come off as overly feminine (this is a business that caters to men and women equally) and shy away male customers which would result in a loss of business.

My final recommendation was to do away with the script font for the same reason I suggested not using the sexy eyes. I felt that it would contribute to making the logo design overly feminine and shy away male clientele. I suggested using a sleek, sexy, unisex font that would compliment the accompanying graphic without making the design too feminine. I could have the word “SNOODY” in a slightly bolder font and “PLEASURES” in a thinner, more feminine font. The client liked this idea as well.
